Apropos of the last tale - I just came across these pictures taken in January 2014 on one of the shoots we work on.  Basil did not have a docked tail. These pictures show what happens to a working dog with a full tail. And Basil's didn't make such a mess as Gunner's - mainly because he was not such a bramble-basher. Basil had his tail docked in February of that year.
